Box Score MELBOURNE – The offense came early and the pitching came late for Polk State Baseball on Tuesday night as the Eagles picked up their sixth win in seven games with a 10-6 victory over Eastern Florida State College.
Polk State (6-6) scored nine of its runs over the first four innings. After scoring three in the top of the first, the Eagles pushed across two in the second, and four in the fourth.
At the top of the order,
Ray Mercer and
Nelson Taylor each scored three runs. Taylor was among four Polk State players to have two hits, including one of the team's two doubles.
Ray Bermudez,
J'Quann Smith, and
Pierce Glading each had a pair of hits. Bermudez finished with a double and a career-high four RBIs.
Trailing 9-2 midway through, the Titans made things interesting in the bottom of the fifth. Before an out was recorded, Eastern Florida pushed across three runs and brought the tying run to the plate.
For Polk State, however, the bullpen would save the day.
Dawson Turner,
Aiden Butler, and
Ryan Combs would combine to allow just a run on four hits in five innings of outstanding relief. Turner picked up the win.
As far as wins go, the victory for Polk State was the 417th in the career of 13th-year Head Coach
Al Corbeil. That's one shy of Bing Tyus' program record. Corbeil and the Eagles will try to capture the victory when they host South Florida State College at Bing Tyus Yard on Wednesday. The scheduled start time is 5 p.m.
