Box Score SANFORD – A 3-run ninth inning put Polk State Head Baseball Coach
Al Corbeil alone atop the school's all-time wins list on Friday afternoon as the Eagles topped Seminole State College of Florida in a thriller, 9-7.
After Seminole State pushed a run across in the eighth inning to draw even at 6 apiece,
J'Quann Smith ripped an RBI triple down the right field line in the ninth to score
Nelson Taylor and put the Eagles ahead for good. Smith would come around to score on a sacrifice fly from
Damion Kenealy before
Pierce Glading added some insurance with a solo home run.
For Corbeil, the win is career No. 419 – one more than legend Bing Tyus' previous mark. Tyus' 25-year-old record was tied on Wednesday night in Polk State's 12-4 win over South Florida State College.
"I'm really grateful for the opportunity Bing gave me when he was athletics director," Corbeil said. "The support from the past and current administration with Athletics Director
Stanley Cromartie has made Polk State a great place to be. I've been fortunate to have great assistants who put in long hours and invest in these young men and to coach a bunch of great players over the years."
Prior to Glading's homer, Polk State (8-6) used the long ball to take the lead on two other occasions on Friday. In the first, Taylor lifted a 3-run blast to get the scoring started. Catcher
Travis Stapleton's solo shot in the seventh broke a 5-5 tie.
The Raiders took their only lead in the second inning on a grand slam by Danny Ramirez. That lead was short-lived as Polk State answered with two runs in the top of the third. After
Aaron Stelogeannis scored on a wild pitch, Glading put the Eagles back in front with an RBI single to center.
Ryan Combs was unable to convert his fourth save of the season but finished the game to pick up the win. He worked the final two innings in the record-breaking win.
"It's a pretty awesome accomplishment," Combs said of his head coach becoming the school's wins leader. "I appreciate all the innings Coach Corbeil and staff have given me this year. It's great to be a part of."
Breton Cusic did not factor in the decision but bounced back from the rough second inning to go six strong frames in the victory. Cusic was able to face the minimum in the first and fourth innings, thanks to a pair of double plays.
Last season, Corbeil joined Tyus as the only coaches in program history to record 400 wins. Tyus (1992) and Corbeil (2012) are also the only coaches in program history to lead the team to FCSAA titles.
"It's amazing what he's accomplished," sophomore pitcher
Jaydon Bishop said. "It's an honor to be part of that legacy. He's a great guy, a great coach, and I'm happy to have had the opportunity to play for him."
Glading finished with three hits in Friday's win while Stelogeannis, Stapleton, and Kenealy each added two hits. Stapleton has now hit in 11 straight games.
With Friday's victory, Polk State has won eight of its last nine following an 0-5 start. Now the program's career wins leader, Corbeil and the Eagles will return home to take on Eastern Florida State College on Saturday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
"Coach Corbeil has had an immense impact on our student-athletes, not just on the field, but he has prioritized hard work in the classroom and helped mold them as young men," Cromartie said. "He has been a tremendous asset to our department and a fine representative for Polk State College. I couldn't be happier for someone so deserving."
