Baseball sunk by Buccaneers in early onslaught

Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Polk State Baseball had a tough start to its weekend. The Eagles conceded 10 runs in the first three innings, as Florida SouthWestern State College defeated Polk on Friday, 12-1.

The Buccaneers (11-8) drove home their 12 runs on 16 hits, while the Eagles (10-9) managed just five total hits in the contest.

After conceding four runs in the top of the first, the Eagles responded in the bottom of the frame with their only run on the night via a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of Ray Bermudez that scored Ray Mercer.

A three-run home run that towered over the left field wall in the top of the second off the bat of FSW centerfielder Albert Serrano extended the Buccaneers' lead to 8-1.

FSW starter Kelan Hoover kept the Polk hitters off balance all night long in his first win of the season, tossing six shutout frames while he only surrendered three hits. Joel Gardner and Derek Williams each recorded three hits and two runs batted in for FSW.

Freshman shortstop Aaron Stelogeannis was the bright spot at the plate for the Eagles, going 3-for-4 with two singles and a double. On the mound, sophomore Breton Cusic fell to 0-2 for Polk in his start after tossing two frames and facing one batter in the third. Freshman Everett Martin and sophomore Dawson Turner did combine for three shutout innings to close out the game for the Eagles.

Polk looks to get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon, as the Eagles welcome Rollins College (B) to Bing Tyus Yard. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
