Polk State Baseball scores season-high 18 runs in rout of Warner (B)

WINTER HAVEN – An eight-run first and a seven-run fifth highlighted a huge offensive day for Polk State Baseball on Friday as the Eagles rolled past Warner University (B), 18-3.

Everyone in the Polk State lineup contributed as the team set a new season-high for runs scored. Each starter scored at least one run for the Eagles (23-16).

Nelson Taylor had two triples in the fifth inning alone on a day in which he scored two runs and drove in four. Ray Mercer set the tone for the Eagles on a 3-for-4 day with two stolen bases and three RBIs on a bases-clearing triple in the first.

"It's good to see the guys show up and swing the bats well," Head Coach Al Corbeil said. "Hopefully we keep the momentum going and have that carry back over into conference play."

Cole Griffith and Evan Wainman also each drove in three runs in the victory. Damion Kenealy, Pierce Glading, Aris Rivera, Roberto Odor, and J'Quann Smith each scored twice.

For Polk State, however, the domination didn't just come at the plate. Dawson Turner, Breton Cusic, and Kenealy combined to allow just one hit with five walks and six strikeouts in six combined shutout innings. Cusic retired all six batters he faced and fanned three to pick up the win.

All of the offense for Warner came in the fourth inning. Brian Garcia's two-run single highlighted the three-run inning as the Royals strung together four hits in the frame.

Polk State has now won consecutive games for the first time since March 15 and March 17 when it rolled to eight straight wins, including five straight to open Suncoast Conference play. The Eagles will remain home to take on Florida Southern College (B) on Monday. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
