WINTER HAVEN - The Polk State baseball team continued to build positive momentum on Monday night with a 13-3 run-rule victory over the Florida Southern College (B) squad.
The Eagles (24-16) scored eight of their 13 runs in the first inning, while the Mocs (4-14) scored all three of their runs in the top of the sixth frame.
Polk scored its eight runs in the first off five hits, with five different hitters driving in a run for the Eagles.
Damion Kenealy cleared the loaded bases with a double off the left field wall that brought home the most runs off a sequence in the frame. The double was his 10th of the season and made him the fourth Polk hitter with 30 or more RBIs this season.
Ray Bermudez and
Roberto Odor joined Kenealy in the multi-RBI club, as Bermudez went 1-3 with two RBIs and Odor went 1-1 with two runs batted in and two walks drawn. Bermudez pushed his RBI total to 35 on the season, which leads the team.Â
Aris Rivera recorded the most base knocks for the Eagles, going 3-4 at the plate with three runs scored.
Between the efforts of Polk starter
Trevor Caldwell and reliever
Everett Martin, the Eagles carried a combined no-hitter into the top of the fifth. Martin earned the winning decision, tossing two shutout innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out four. The trio of Caldwell, Martin, and
Sam Duvall combined for 10 strikeouts on the mound over the seven-inning contest.
Out of the three runs the Mocs scored in the top of the sixth inning, two of those were scored via Polk errors.
The Eagles conclude their non-conference excursion tomorrow afternoon versus the Warner University (B) team. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. with a ceremony to honor Polk Head Coach
Al Corbeil becoming the program's all-time leader in wins to take place at 3:30 p.m.
