Box Score CLEARWATER — Polk State Baseball will have to wait at least two more days to book its trip to the FCSAA Tournament. The Eagles let a six-run lead slip away on Monday night in a heartbreaking 10-9 loss to St. Petersburg College.
The Titans took their first and only lead of the night with a four-run eighth inning. Against Polk State closer
Ryan Combs, Coltin Pizzio tied the game 9-9 with a two-run single. Brett Wagner would plate the go-ahead run later in the inning.
Polk State (30-18, 12-7 Suncoast Conference) loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth. After
Aaron Stelogeannis grounded into a double play, which began with the lead runner being thrown out at home,
Nelson Taylor flied out to deep right field to end the game.
The Eagles started strong with five runs in the second inning.
Roberto Odor doubled home the first run. After Taylor was hit with the bases loaded,
Ray Bermudez singled home a pair. A wild pitch allowed a fifth run to score.
Odor plated another run with a triple in the third to push the lead to 6-0. The freshman finished 3-for-4 and a home run short of the cycle, scoring twice.
St. Petersburg chipped away with three runs in the third and one in the fourth but the Eagles answered with three runs in the fifth. Stelogeannis drove home two of those with a single before an error allowed the third to score.
The Titans answered with runs in the sixth and seventh before taking the lead with the big eighth. Combs took the loss for the Eagles.
In addition to Odor's big night,
Travis Stapleton, and
Aris Rivera each had two hits. Like Odor, Rivera and
Ray Mercer each scored twice in the loss.
Polk State will try to clinch an FCSAA Tournament berth and win the season series as the teams meet for the final time on Wednesday in Winter Haven. The Eagles will also celebrate Sophomore Night. The contest is scheduled for 5 p.m.
