Box Score GAINESVILLE – No. 17 Polk State Volleyball continued its tear through Citrus Conference play with a dominant victory over the Santa Fe College Saints on Wednesday night in straight sets to win its seventh consecutive contest.
The Eagles put distance between themselves and the Saints early, jumping out to a 9-1 in the opening set, which Polk State took convincingly, 25-8. A service ace by sophomore defensive specialist
Faith Marquis against her former team clinched the set for Polk.
In the most competitive set of the match, the Saints trailed just 8-6. However, the Eagles rattled off an 8-2 run to shift the momentum of the second set. The run gave the Eagles a 16-8 lead. Five of the eight Polk State points during the run came off Santa Fe errors.
Back-to-back kills by sophomore outside hitter
Keionna Mackey, another former Saint, clinched the set for the Eagles, 25-19. Mackey paced the Eagles with 11 kills and a .428 hitting percentage.
Polk powered its way to the sweep of Santa Fe in the third set, opening things up on a 14-3 run. Mackey had three kills and two block assists during the run, while freshman outside hitter
Martina Gonzato added two kills during that stretch. Another set was closed out by Marquis, as the Eagles cemented the match with a 25-10 tilt in the third set.
"We have been working a lot on our serve and I think it showed in this game," shared Polk State Head Coach Dayanna Barbosa. "The girls kept the energy high,which also helped us earn the win."
The final ace by Marquis pushed her match total to seven, the most of her collegiate career. The 10 total aces by Polk State marked the third time in the last four matches that the Eagles have registered double digits in service aces.
The Eagles will put their win streak and unbeaten record in Citrus play on the line in Fort Myers against No. 1 Florida SouthWestern State College on Saturday. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
