RANGER, Texas — Polk State Volleyball was unable to secure a win on its trip to the Lone Star State. The Eagles fell victim to a pair of sweeps on Saturday -- the final day of the Wrangler/Ranger Roundup.

Polk State opened the day with a straight-set loss to Arizona Western College, 3-0. Despite the 25-17, 25-8, 25-16 defeat, the Eagles had an early lead in each set.

In the opening set, Dublin Fitzgerald had two early kills and combined with Chillis Oke for a block at the net to give the Eagles an early 3-2 lead. Arizona Western responded with a 6-0 run to go in front for good.

Fitzgerald and Camila Freitag each had kills early in the second set to give Polk State a 2-1 lead. Not much else went right for Polk State in the second.

The third set was the most competitive. After falling behind 2-0, the Eagles used a pair of Freitag kills and an Ana Martinez ace to take a 4-3 lead. The Matadors scored the next four points to move in front for good.

Fitzgerald filled up the box score with nine kills, six digs and four blocks. Martinez added nine digs and two service aces.

Polk State closed its stay in Texas with a 3-0 loss to Ranger College. The Rangers completed the sweep by scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-22.

The first set was competitive early on. Adriauna Combs' kill gave Polk State (0-7) the early 4-3 lead. Ranger seized control later in the set with a 7-1 run to turn a one-point lead into a 17-10 advantage.

Polk State led by three points on multiple occasions during the second set, including 12-9 following a Fitzgerald kill. The last tie came at 19 on another Fitzgerald kill, but Ranger was able to outscore the Eagles 6-3 to take a commanding 2-0 set lead.

Polk State never led in the third, quickly falling behind 14-6. Polk State was able to get as close as two late in the set on consecutive Fitzgerald kills but a lob shot by Ranger's Key'Maria McBride ended the match.

Fitzgerald set career-highs with 12 kills and five blocks. Mariana Castano added eight kills and two blocks. Jasmine Mahoney led the Eagles with 21 assists. Addison Holley finished with 10 digs in the defeat. 

Following two busy weekends, Polk State will have the week off before heading to Hobbs, N.M. for the New Mexico JUCO Tournament. The Eagles will play four total matches on Sept. 11 and 12.
