LAKELAND -- Despite several key individuals battling injuries, Polk State Soccer showcased its depth as a team on Friday, blanking Florida National University JV 3-0 for the second time this season.Â
The Eagles (5-2) dictated possession for the contest, outshooting the Conquistadors (0-5-1) 21-6, including 13-0 on frame.
Polk State wasted little time getting on the board, as the Eagles put their second shot attempt into the back of the net when freshman
Madison Caustic volleyed a ball from
Jessica Bailey over the head of the FNU keeper in the 11th minute. The goal was Caustic's first of her collegiate career, who typically plays defense but was thrust into an offensive role on Friday.
"The effort of the team today was fantastic," shared Polk State Assistant Coach Tawanda Kaseke. "We placed a lot of players in unfamiliar positions and they stepped up for their team to get the result."
The Eagles had another first-time collegiate scorer less than 10 minutes later, as freshman midfielder
Dylan Fernandez rocketed a cross from
Yerika Pereira top shelf to grow the Polk advantage to 2-0.
Polk State took the 2-0 lead over Florida National into the half.
Caustic continued her memorable performance with her second collegiate score in the 77th minute, where she won possession in the middle of a scrum in the box and ripped a shot far post for the goal.
"We needed this win today," commented Caustic, who played her high school soccer just down the road at McKeel Academy. "It felt great to be able to help my team by scoring those goals and getting to do it in front of my family was extra special."
Polk State earned all seven of its corner kicks in the second half, while defensively, the Eagles conceded just two set pieces to the Conquistadors.Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ella Sebree earned her second full-90 shutout for Polk this season.
The Eagles head to New Port Richey next Wednesday to battle Pasco-Hernando State College for the second time this season. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
