Polk State Hoops closes East Georgia State Classic with easy win over Walters State

Box Score SWAINSBORO — After consecutive losses by a combined five points, Polk State Basketball left no doubt on Friday. The Eagles closed the East Georgia Classic with a resounding 78-63 win over Walters State College in a contest that probably wasn't as close as the final score indicated.

It was domination from the start. After a 3-pointer from Karl Knighten Jr. in the corner, Polk State (10-2) led 28-8 less than 11 minutes into the game.

The Eagles led 42-21 at halftime. Largely against reserves, the Senators outscored Polk State in the second half, but never seriously threatened. Polk State led by as many as 26 points in the victory.

After a tough shooting night from the field and deep on Thursday, the Eagles lit it up on Friday afternoon, shooting 54% for the game and 6-for-12 from beyond the 3-point arc. They also turned it over just four times in the victory.

Knighten and Fray Nguimbi each finished with 16 points to lead Polk State. Ty Owens added 10 points, four assists, and three steals. Aiden Goins led Walters State with 13 points.

After four straight contests away from home, Polk State will return to the Health Center on Tuesday for its final game of the calendar year against Palm Beach State College. The Eagles won the first meeting between the schools last weekend in Lake Worth, 87-81. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
