Box Score WINTER HAVEN — It took until the final day in February but Polk State Basketball is in the Citrus Conference win column. The Eagles broke through on Saturday with a dominant 103-87 victory over Hillsborough College.
Polk State (5-23, 1-14 Citrus Conference) never trailed in the contest. Both teams, however, shot it well in the first half.
The Eagles shot 62% in the first half but Hillsborough shot a respectable 49%. The Polk State lead was 56-50 at the break but in the second half, it turned up the defensive intensity.
After shooting 8-for-13 from deep in the first half, the Hawks were held to just 34% in the second half. The Eagles, however, shot better than 53% for the game and a stellar 11-for-20 from beyond the 3-point arc. Polk State gradually pulled away.
Eric Dailey led six Polk State players in double figures with 23 points on 9-for-15 from the field to go with five assists. One game after pouring in a career scoring high, Tre Jackson narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with 17 points and nine rebounds.
Josh Pitts added 16 points on 6 of 9 from the field. Isaiah McCray and Jimmy Cami each scored 13 points. Cami led Polk State with two blocks. Ethan Simon added 10 points in the win.
Chandler Davis led Hillsborough with 31 points and six assists. Manyaka Luma added 17 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
Polk State will look to end the season on a high note when it hosts Eastern Florida State College for Sophomore Night on Monday. Cami and guard Kellen Cashman will be honored before the game.
