Box Score ST. PETERSBURG – For the first time this season, Polk State Basketball has a losing record. A late run proved to be a case of too little, too late as the Eagles fell at St. Petersburg College on Tuesday night, 78-72.
For most of the first half, things were pretty even. Polk State (12-13, 3-8 Citrus Conference) briefly led and stayed within striking distance before a 12-4 run by St. Petersburg College to end the half gave the Titans a 37-24 lead at the break.
After letting a 14-point halftime lead slip away in the first meeting last month in Winter Haven, Polk State sought to return the favor on Tuesday. The Eagles trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half, but three-point plays by
TrayVon Osborne and
Moses Gordon highlighted a 17-5 run.
Down 73-69 with just over a minute to play,
Derrick Jones Jr. look to have an easy layup that would have cut the lead to two, but St. Petersburg's Tim Okojie came from nowhere to make the block, which led to a fast-break bucket for the Titans.
Although St. Petersburg struggled from the free throw line down the stretch, a three-pointer from
Dominick Nelson would serve as the only basket for the Eagles following Okojie's block.
Nelson led the Eagles with 23 points, which included 19 in the second half. Osborne came up big for Polk State with a season-high 20 points, marking the first time in more than two months that he scored in double figures. Jones finished with 11 points in the defeat.
The win for St. Petersburg gives the Titans the season sweep over the Eagles. Polk State will try to avoid another sweep on Saturday when it heads to Fort Myers to take on No. 25 Florida SouthWestern State College. Tip time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
