WINTER HAVEN – After a week off, Polk State Basketball will get hoops fans ready for the holiday season when it hosts the two-day Polk State Classic.

The Eagles will welcome a pair of out-of-state programs to the Health Center for what should be an exciting couple of days of junior college action. St. Petersburg College will also make its way to Winter Haven for the four-team, two-day invitational.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE

Friday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m.: Brunswick Community College (9-2) at Polk State College (4-4) – Polk State Classic

Saturday, Dec. 20 at 3 p.m.: South Georgia State College (3-6) at Polk State (4-4) – Polk State Classic

PREVIEW

• After scoring in double figures in each of his first seven collegiate games, Polk State guard Eric Dailey was held scoreless against No. 5 Northwest Florida State College on Dec. 7. Despite that, Dailey still leads the Eagles and ranks eighth in the FCSAA, averaging 17.1 points per contest. Teammate Isaiah McCray is ninth in the FCSAA in scoring, averaging 16.3 points per contest.

• Polk State will try to avoid losing three straight non-conference games for the first time in more than two years.

• Forward Ethan Simon continues to rank among the FCSAA leaders in rebounding and shot blocking. Simon's 9.6 boards per contest average is good for third in the state. His 1.3 blocks per game average ranks seventh. He is also 13th in field goal percentage, shooting 58% from the floor.

• Polk State is 1-1 so far this season against out-of-state competition. After dropping a 134-127 double-overtime heartbreaker to University of South Carolina Salkehatchie in the season opener, the Eagles bounced back to beat Wake Technical Community College on Nov. 1, 89-63.

• The Polk State Classic will feature two teams that reached the national NJCAA Tournament last season. Brunswick Community College finished 28-5 and will come in as winners of seven straight. South Georgia State College went 27-7 last season, but is just 3-6 to begin this season.

• Brunswick is averaging nearly 90 points per game but has only two players averaging in double figures. Sophomore guard Alius Bowser averages a team-best 12.7 points per game while shooting 50% from the field. For South Georgia State College, Chandler Thomas is averaging a team-high 17.5 points while shooting 49% from the field and grabbing 6.5 boards per game.
