Box Score WINTER HAVEN — It took 45 minutes and a ton of resiliency but Polk State Basketball celebrated Sophomore Day on Saturday with an 80-73 overtime win over Florida SouthWestern State College.
For much of the day, Polk State (17-9, 5-7 Citrus Conference) found itself down by double digits. The Eagles trailed 40-34 at halftime.
Polk State used a 10-2 second-half run to cut a 57-47 deficit to two. The Eagles clawed to within two multiple times but couldn't draw even until the final minute of regulation.
After two free throws by
Ty Owens with 56 seconds left made it 71-69, Owens found
Fray Nguimbi at the rim for the tying basket with 2.5 seconds remaining in regulation.
Owens gave Polk State its first lead since the opening minutes with a jumper on the first possession of overtime.
Jordan Brown and
Cole White followed with baskets of their own as the Eagles opened the extra period on a 6-0 run and never looked back.
The Buccaneers were held without a field goal in overtime and missed their first four free throws. Polk State outscored Florida SouthWestern State 9-2 in the extra period. The Eagles finished with a 67-44 rebounding advantage.
Owens celebrated Sophomore Day with a career-high 29 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists. Nguimbi added 18 points and 11 rebounds. White finished with 15 points and six boards in the win.
Ahmed Soumahoro led FSW with 22 points. K'Jei Parker added 18 points in the loss.
Entering the day, Polk State had never defeated the Buccaneers under Head Coach Brandon Giles. It has now won three games in a row for the first time since the end of non-conference play. Polk State will try to stay hot on Wednesday when it visits Santa Fe College.
