WINTER HAVEN – A huge week for Polk State Athletics is on tap.

Both Polk State Volleyball and Polk State Soccer will face No. 1 teams on Wednesday night in conference play. Both programs will also spend the rest of September on the road.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE

Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m.: Polk State College (5-7, 0-2 Citrus Conference) at No. 1 Florida SouthWestern State College (13-1, 2-0 Citrus Conference)

Saturday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m.: Polk State (5-7, 0-2 Citrus Conference) at Daytona State College (8-7, 2-1 Citrus Conference)

PREVIEW

• Ella Langstrom has had multiple blocks in 11 of Polk State's 12 matches this season. She finished with three last week against Hillsborough Community College and two against Miami Dade College. Her 0.90 blocks per set average ranks seventh in the FCSAA.

• Addison Phillippe and Alexia Ortiz continue to rank among the FCSAA leaders in service aces per set. Both are tied for third in the state with a 0.60 average. Phillippe also ranks third in the FCSAA, averaging 7.33 assists per set.

• Polk State's Isabella Ramos' 3.83 digs per set average continues to rank fourth in the FCSAA. Ramos had recorded at least 10 digs in 10 of the Eagles' 12 matches this season.

• Against Florida SouthWestern State College on Wednesday, Polk State will look to beat a No. 1 team for the first time since knocking off Iowa Western Community College to begin the 2022 season. That contest was also at Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers. 

• Florida SouthWestern State has won seven straight meetings against Polk State. The Buccaneers have the FCSAA leader in several major categories, including Sara Gamboa, who averages 3.82 kills per set. Irina Makinen leads the FCSAA and ranks fourth in the nation, averaging 9.36 assists per set. Aleksandra Lucic leads the FCSAA with a .485 hitting percentage and ranks second in blocks per set (1.32).

• Daytona State College's Alyssa Rosa is a player to watch for the Falcons. She ranks fifth in the FCSAA, averaging 3.81 assists per set.

Sunday, Sept. 28 at 5 p.m.: Polk State (6-2-1, 1-0-1 Region 8) at Miami Dade College (1-2-2, 0-1-1 Region 8)

PREVIEW

• Polk State picked up its first Region 8 win in nearly three years with a thrilling 3-2 victory over No. 6 Eastern Florida State College last week, thanks to a late goal by Marie Narewski. It was also the Eagles' first win over a nationally ranked team since 2022.

• Polk State's Janessa Crespo and Marie Narewski rank first and second, respectively, in Region 8 in points. Crespo leads the region with 21 total points and nine assists – good for second nationally. Narewski ranks second with 19 points and leads the region with eight goals.

• Crespo and Narewski each had career-nights for Polk State in a 9-1 win over Saint Leo University JV on Thursday. Both scored two goals. Crespo added three assists while Narewski finished with two.

• The nine goals for Polk State against Saint Leo JV was the most for the program since 2022. Polk State leads Region 8 with 36 total goals and ranks 10th nationally, averaging four goals per match. Daytona State College averages 4.33 goals per match – good for eighth nationally.

• At Daytona State on Wednesday, Polk State will look for its first win over a No. 1 team since beating Eastern Florida State College in Lakeland in 2022.

• Daytona State's Shaneil Buckley leads the Falcons in goals (6), assists (3) and points (15). Her 27 shots is tops in Region 8.

• Polk State will try to take the season series from Miami Dade College when the teams meet on Sunday. The teams played to a 1-1 draw in Lakeland earlier this month. Narewski scored the lone goal for Polk State.

• Polk State goalkeeper Ashley Miller and Miami Dade's Ashley Fonseca rank first and second, respectively, in Region 8 in saves. Miller has 27 for the year; Fonseca has 18.
