Box Score LAKELAND – Polk State Soccer faced its toughest test yet on Wednesday. In the end, the Eagles remained perfect with a 4-1 victory over Webber International University JV.
For the second straight match, Polk State (3-0) faced an early deficit. The Warriors scored following a corner in the fifth minute to take an early lead. For the second straight match, that was all the Eagles would allow.
"We're noticing the personality of this team," Head Coach Dee Shivraman said. "This is the second match in a row that we fell behind early. Our kids don't wave the white flag. They keep their composure and keep fighting."
Polk State had the equalizer in the 25th minute as
Marie Narewski netted her third goal of the year.
Kiana Kropp was credited with the assist.
The score would remain deadlocked for 33 minutes before
Janessa Crespo put Polk State ahead for good with her third goal of the year. The go-ahead goal came off a beautiful feed from
Laura Sofia Males.
Webber International appeared to have a golden opportunity to knot the match about a minute later but goalkeeper
Ashley Miller's diving stop preserved the lead. Polk State added some insurance in the 72nd minute with a goal from
Alayna Dial.
Lulu Vester had the assist.
With about 10 minutes remaining, Polk State ended any hope of a Webber comeback as Kropp flipped in a corner kick from Crespo. It was the team-leading fourth assist of the year for Crespo.
"I want to have a great season for myself but I want to create opportunities for my teammates as well," Crespo said. "We knew today wasn't going to be an easy game. We played hard. We kept our heads up and kept pushing."
After the opening minutes, the Eagles dominated possession. Miller shined in goal for Polk State with three saves.
"Ashley is playing with great composure in the back," Shivraman added. "We have a lot of speed and skill up front. We're doing a lot of little things that make a big difference. We're getting contributions from everyone."
After three straight home wins to open the year, Polk State will hit the road for the first time on Tuesday but it won't go far. The Eagles will head to Lake Wales to visit Warner University JV.
