WINTER HAVEN – Polk State Volleyball will play just one home match during the month of September. In addition to supporting the Eagles, fans will have the opportunity to support a local nonprofit that strives to make a difference.
Prior to Polk State's Sept. 11 match against Andrew College, food donations will be accepted to support the faith-based nonprofit Talbot House Ministries. Headquartered in Lakeland, Talbot House officially welcomed its first families to the new Center for Women & Children location in Winter Haven, which will help victims of domestic violence, this week. Those who bring in a donation to the match will earn free admission.
"This is a great opportunity to spotlight what they do for local families," Polk State Head Coach Jessica Beal said. "Hopefully, this will raise awareness for their organization and bring in some additional support for our team."
Talbot House feeds between 400 and 500 people each day, according to Deborah Cozzetti, Director of Programming. In addition to meals, the nonprofit also provides showers, clothing and housing assistance among other services. It has several programs, including for addiction, diversion and education.
"We rely on the compassion of our community," Cozzetti explained. "This is a great opportunity and we're excited to reach new people. We love partnering with Polk State."
For next week's contest – the last before Polk State begins Citrus Conference play – Talbot House is requesting large cans of vegetables, fruit, potatoes and brown sugar. The nonprofit serves people of all ages. More information about Talbot House can be
found here.
"We survive on donations alone," Cozzetti concluded. "Whatever comes in is what we serve to those in need. There was a time last year when food was scarce. It's critical."
