AUBURNDALE – Polk State Baseball will head into its home opener with a winning record. The Eagles closed the Florida JUCO Early Bird Kickoff at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex with a pair of seven-inning victories on Saturday.
Polk State rallied to a 5-4 victory over South Florida State College to open the day. Down 3-1 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles drew even on a two-run single from
Zach Lester.
Hayden Testerman scored on a wild pitch later in the inning to give Polk State its first lead.
After the Panthers drew even in the top of the sixth inning, Polk State went right back in front in the bottom of the inning as Testerman's sacrifice fly scored
Carter Finnel.
Anthony Schatz faced just one batter but was able to record a strikeout to strand the tying run in scoring position to collect the save.
Only two of the four runs allowed by Polk State in the first game were earned.
Ronald Causby got the start and went the first 3.1 innings.
Dalton Tibbetts and
Aiden Dolan each allowed just a hit in 1.2 innings apiece.
At the plate, Lester and
Bradyn Potter had two hits apiece. Gabriel Borges and Dale Sutton each had two hits for the Panthers.
Polk State closed the day with a 10-6 win over Montgomery College. Polk State led 2-0 in the third before Montgomery's Eromosele Okokie belted a three-run home run to give the Raptors the lead. That would be short-lived as the Eagles responded with a four-run fourth.
After
Kustarr Webb and
Jack Muller scored on wild pitches to give Polk State the lead,
Leo Suarez pushed it to 6-3 with a two-run home run. Potter also homered for Polk State (2-1) in the win.
Polk State scored two runs in each of the next two innings to hit double digits for the first time on the young season. Potter, Lester and Muller all finished with two hits and an RBI. Potter scored three runs in the victory.
Starting pitcher
Roman Corinti wasn't his sharpest but picked up his first win of the season for Polk State. Jayden Mander finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for Montgomery.
After bouncing back from a disheartening loss in Friday's season opener, Polk State will play its home opener on Tuesday against Hillsborough College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
