Box Score WINTER HAVEN — Polk State Volleyball was unable to salvage the season split with No. 3 Florida SouthWestern State College but the sets were much more competitive this time around. The Eagles fell at home on Saturday, 3-0.
Polk State fell by set scores of 25-20, 25-12, and 25-16. Throughout the afternoon, however, the Eagles (0-17, 0-6 Citrus Conference) refused to roll over.Â
After falling behind 4-0 in the opening set, Polk State used a 5-1 run to draw even.
Camila Freitag had the first kill of the day to start the run. That was followed by a block at the net by
Dublin Fitzgerald and
Adriauna Combs.
Later in the set, it appeared as though FSW might pull away. The Buccaneers led 19-14, but Combs jumpstarted a 5-0 run with a kill before coming through with consecutive service aces. Freitag also had a kill during the run. Florida SouthWestern used a 6-1 run to close the set.
An FSW service error to start the second set gave Polk State its first lead of the day, 1-0. The early parts of the set went back and forth. The last tie came at 7 on an ace by
Jasmine Mahoney. Florida SouthWestern outscored Polk State 18-5 to close the set.
Polk State again started strong in the third set, jumping to a 7-5 lead. After the Eagles tied the set on an error, an
Alicia Maris gave them a 6-5 lead. The last tie came at 8 on a
Chillis Oke kill.
Freitag led Polk State with six kills. Kenzinton Hyde paced the Eagles with 10 assists while
Ana Martinez added seven digs. Isabela Candido led the Buccaneers with a match-high nine kills.Â
Still in search of its first victory, Polk State will remain home on Wednesday night. The Eagles will host their annual "Dig Pink" night against Daytona State College.
