WINTER HAVEN – One Polk State season will wrap up this week while two others are in the heart of conference play.

Polk State Basketball will celebrate Sophomore Night on Monday. Polk State's diamond sports will combine for 10 games, including seven Citrus Conference contests this week.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE

Monday, March 2 at 7 p.m.: Eastern Florida State College (22-7, 11-4 Citrus Conference) at Polk State College (5-23, 1-14 Citrus Conference)

PREVIEW

• Polk State will celebrate Sophomore Night prior to Monday's contest with Eastern Florida State College. Sophomores Jimmy Cami and Kellen Cashman will be recognized before the contest.

• Polk State earned its first Citrus Conference win on Saturday with a 103-87 victory over Hillsborough College. The win snapped a 21-game losing streak. Eric Dailey led six Polk State players in double figures with 23 points. 

• The 103 points on Saturday was the most for the Eagles in a conference game since a triple-overtime loss to Daytona State College on March 15, 2021. It was the most in a conference win since Feb. 20, 2019 when it beat Hillsborough, 104-77.

• Isaiah McCray enters the final night of the regular season among the top shooters in the FCSAA. He ranks fourth in 3-point percentage (.410) and free-throw percentage (.825).

• Monday's contest will be the final game at Polk State for Head Coach Brandon Giles. Giles will resign at season's end after 119 victories and two postseason appearances.

• Eastern Florida State won the first meeting between the teams in Melbourne on Jan. 31 by an 87-80 score. Isaiah McCray led the Eagles with 21 points in the loss. The Titans have already clinched a spot in the FCSAA Tournament but can finish as high as second in the Citrus Conference.

• The Titans are led by Sean Register Jr. Register leads the FCSAA and ranks third nationally, averaging 24.7 points per game. He finished with 27 points and 13 rebounds in the first meeting between the schools this season.

Friday, March 6 at 11:15 a.m.: Iowa Lakes Community College (6-2) at Polk State (5-9) – The Spring Games

PREVIEW

• Polk State will look for its first Citrus Conference win as it plays four conference games this week. Thursday's doubleheader, originally scheduled for last week, will be the first conference matchups at home this season for the Eagles. 

• Freshman Calonnie Holmes enters the week leading Polk State in several offensive categories, including batting average (.372), hits (16), triples (1), home runs (3), stolen bases (10) and slugging (.651).

• From the circle, Avery Wende and Hayle Peterson are tied for the team lead for Polk State with two wins apiece. Although the Eagles fell, Wende is coming off a stellar outing in her Citrus Conference debut against Daytona State College. She allowed just two runs in 5.1 innings against a top-20 team. Polk State's Layla Hinojosa leads the FCSAA with an 0.50 ERA.

• Miami Dade's Caroline Mito ranks third in the FCSAA with a .537 batting average this season. 

• Polk State went 4-0 against St. Petersburg College and 2-2 against Miami Dade College last year.

• St. Petersburg College is led by Alexandra Schleissing. She leads the Titans with three home runs and 20 RBIs. 

• Polk State will take on Mott Community College and Iowa Lakes Community College on Friday as part of The Spring Games. The Eagles are 14-5 against out-of-state competition under Head Coach Kevin Lewis and 3-1 this season.

PREVIEW

• Polk State will try to snap a six-game Citrus Conference losing streak this week with three games against St. Petersburg College. The Eagles were swept by Seminole State College of Florida this past week. 

• Polk State has 10 players who have homered this season, including eight with multiple blasts. Zach Lester leads the team with four homers. Catcher Marvin Montenegro is one behind with three.

• During Polk State's conference skid, the opponent scored to win in the last at-bat in three of those, including both games of Sunday's doubleheader against Seminole State. In one-run games this season, the Eagles are 2-5.

• In Polk State's 17-2 win over University of Tampa (B) last week, the Eagles set a season-high for runs in a road game and a season-high for hits with 20. Montenegro, Bradyn Potter, Kenay Acevedo and Jack Muller each had three knocks.

• St. Petersburg's Nick Upperman leads the FCSAA with a .467 batting average and ranks second in the state with 15 stolen bases. Upperman began his career at Polk State in 2024.

• Polk State went 3-2 against St. Petersburg last season, but the Titans won two of the three conference matchups.
