Polk State Baseball swept by No. 3 FSW in pair of run-rule losses

WINTER HAVEN – It was a series and doubleheader to forget for Polk State Baseball. The Eagles were swept at Bing Tyus Yard on Saturday by No. 3 Florida SouthWestern State College.

After dropping a heartbreaker on Thursday, the Eagles (11-8, 3-3 Citrus Conference) suffered a pair of run-rule defeats to conclude the series. After an 11-4 start, Polk State has now lost four straight.

The Buccaneers needed only five innings to defeat Polk State in the first game, 27-4. FSW scored at least five runs in each of the first four innings, including seven in the first, six in the second and eight in the third.

Polk State trailed 21-0 at one point before Kevin Brunet broke up the shutout by homering for the second straight game. The Eagles scored three runs in the fourth. Brunet finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Hayden Testerman added an RBI double and a run scored.

FSW finished with 26 hits. Robbie Demetree went 5-for-6 with a home run, four runs scored and five RBIs. Jonah St. Antoine also homered. Four other Buccaneers had three-hit games.

The second game started better for Polk State, but FSW closed with 11 unanswered runs to win in six innings, 17-6.

Testerman's RBI single highlighted a three-run first inning as the Eagles raced to a 3-0 lead. Greg Caban's solo home run cut the lead to 3-1, but Testerman answered with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.

Polk State led 5-3 before Aiden Talarico tied it up with a two-run blast for FSW in the fourth. The Eagles regained the lead in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single from Jack Muller. From there, little went right.

The Buccaneers went ahead for good on a three-run bomb from Chris Walley in the top of the fifth. Walley, Bishop Quarles and Evan Tavares all homered during a nine-run sixth for FSW that put the game away.

Bradyn Potter scored two runs for Polk State. Testerman and Muller each finished with two RBIs.

Walley finished with six RBIs for the Buccaneers in the win. Quarles was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

After suffering the sweep to Florida SouthWestern State, Polk State will look to get back on track as it hits the road to take on University of Tampa (B) on Tuesday. Start time is slated for 5 p.m.
