Polk State Softball drops hard-fought doubleheader at No. 18 Daytona State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DAYTONA BEACH – Polk State Softball wasn't able to come home with a win in its first Citrus Conference doubleheader of the season but gave No. 18 Daytona State College all it wanted in the game two.

The Falcons closed the day by holding off Polk State, 2-1. Shut out for six innings, the Eagles brought the go-ahead run to the plate.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the seventh, Leia Hurst started the rally with a one-out single. Following a groundout, Lacey Osborne kept the Eagles alive with a pinch-hit single.

After Hurst scored on a wild pitch that cut the lead in half and put the tying run in scoring position, Daytona State turned to closer Leala Kloewer. She was able to get Grace Adamonis to ground out to end the contest.

For five innings, Polk State's Avery Wende and Daytona State's Kaylee Martineau traded zeroes from the circle. The Falcons finally broke through with a pair of runs in the sixth.

Destiny Horcajo broke up the shutout with an RBI triple before scoring on a sacrifice fly.

Wende was stellar from the circle, allowing just two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings. Hurst had two of the three hits for the Eagles.

Polk State dropped the first game in five innings, 9-1. The Eagles, however, did draw first blood.

After two scoreless innings from Hayle Peterson, Calonnie Holmes doubled with one out in the top of the third before scoring on an RBI double from Kirsten Aldridge. Those would be the only two hits of the game for Polk State (5-9, 0-2 Citrus Conference).

Daytona State went ahead for good with four runs in the bottom of the inning – three unearned. After Peterson worked a scoreless fourth, the Falcons put it away with five runs in the fifth.

Azlynn Gomes, Alexa Edmands and Nyree James all tripled for Daytona State. Gomes finished with three RBIs in the win. Pitcher Ava Unser struck out eight for Daytona State.

After a pair of tough conference losses on Tuesday, Polk State will return home for a single game against Grand Rapids Community College on Friday. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
