Box Score 2 LEESBURG – In its first action in more than a week, Polk State Softball was unable to pick up a win on Thursday. The Eagles were swept by Lake-Sumter State College in a doubleheader.
In the first game, Polk State was its own worst enemy as the Eagles committed nine errors, leading to 11 unearned runs in a 14-10 loss.
Polk State jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first, thanks to a bases-loaded walk to
Lacey Osborne and an RBI single from
Makenzie Foster. Lake-Sumter State scored the next six runs, but for a while, the Eagles battled back.
Down 6-2 through three innings, Polk State cut the deficit in half with a two-out rally in the top of the fourth, capped by
Leia Hurst's two-run single. An inning later, Foster belted a two-run home run to tie the contest at six apiece.
The wheels fell off in the bottom of the fifth as the Lakehawks scored seven times. Baylie Goodwin's RBI double put Lake-Sumter ahead for good. Polk State committed four errors in the inning.
The Eagles scored runs in each of the final four innings. Down 14-7, Polk State tried to make things interesting in the seventh. After
Thea Williams singled in a run,
Calonnie Holmes cut the deficit to four with a two-run triple. Lake-Sumter's Kaylin Smith was able to get Hurst to ground out to end the game, leaving the tying run on deck.
Holmes had a nice game at the plate for Polk State, finishing 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Foster and
Kirsten Aldridge each had two hits. Aldridge scored twice while Foster and Hurst each finished with three RBIs.
Emmy Lee was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for Lake-Sumter. Goodwin finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Polk State outhit the Lakehawks, 12-11.
Polk State never led in the second game – a 7-3 loss. Mittie O'Brien set the tone for Lake-Sumter with a solo home run in the first inning. The Lakehawks seized control with three runs in the second and two more in the third.
Down 6-0 through three, Polk State finally got going offensively in the top of the fourth as Williams singled home the Eagles' first run. An error in the field allowed a second runner,
Kaylyn Mitchum, to score.
After Lake-Sumter got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, Foster doubled home Hurst to cut the deficit back to four in the top of the fifth. Foster finished 2-for-4 for Polk State as eight Eagles recorded hits in the nightcap.
O'Brien, Goodwin and Sarah Torres each had two hits for Lake-Sumter. Each team finished with nine hits.
Now on a five-game losing streak, Polk State will look to snap its skid on Sunday when it heads to Madeira Beach to take on Richard Bland College, out of Virginia, for a doubleheader. Game times are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
