WINTER HAVEN — Polk State Softball used grand slams in both games of the doubleheader on Tuesday to complete the sweep of No. 20 Daytona State College.
Polk State started the day strong. The Eagles used a pair of
Kirsten Aldridge home runs to erase an early four-run deficit and roll to a 12-8 victory in the first game.
Down 4-0 in the bottom of the second, Polk State clawed to within one with three runs in the inning.
Emma Kaylor's two-run home run highlighted the inning.
After the Falcons increased their lead to 5-3 in the third, the Eagles responded with four runs in the bottom half. All four runs scored on bases-loaded walks to take a 7-5 lead.
Kirsten Aldridge led off the fourth with a solo home run to increase the advantage to 8-5. Daytona State cut the deficit to 8-7 before Aldridge delivered the biggest hit of the game. Her grand slam in the fifth gave the Eagles a commanding 12-7 lead and capped the Polk State scoring.
Aldridge finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Kaylor added three RBIs and two runs scored.
Makenzie Foster went 2-for-3 with three runs scored in the win.
Starting pitcher
Hayle Peterson allowed six runs but only three were earned in four innings as she earned the win.
Layla Hinojosa went the final three innings, allowing two unearned runs to earn the save.
Ashley Bert finished a triple shy of the cycle for Daytona State. Aurielle Revis went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.
In the second game,
Lacey Osborne played the role of hero. Her walk-off single lifted the Eagles to a 6-5 victory.
Polk State (16-22, 8-14 Citrus Conference) took a 5-3 lead into the seventh inning. The Falcons drew even in the inning on Nyree James' two-run double.
In the bottom half of the inning,
Savanah Ford opened by drawing a walk. Following a two-out error kept the inning alive, Osborne flared it to center to score pinch runner
Ciana Vargas to complete the sweep.
For the second game in a row, Polk State was able to overcome an early deficit. After Azlynn Gomes gave Daytona State a 3-0 with a two-run home run in the third inning, Polk State took the lead with five runs in the fourth inning.

In the circle,
Avery Wende allowed just two earned runs in 5.1 innings. Osborne had two of the five hits for Polk State. Destiny Horcajo finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for Daytona State.
The sweep is the first for Polk State in a home Citrus doubleheader this season. The Eagles will hit the road on Thursday for two games against St. Petersburg College.
