WINTER HAVEN – With less than 12 hours of downtime between Thursday night's finish and Friday morning's contests, Polk State Softball settled for another split. The Eagles went 1-1 against out-of-state competition on Friday as part of The Spring Games.
Polk State opened the day by winning in its final at-bat for the second straight game. The Eagles scored four unanswered runs to top Mott Community College, 5-4.
Trailing 4-1 in the fourth, Polk State was able to chip away.
Savanah Ford's hot shot up the middle scored
Makenzie Foster. After driving in the first run of the day for Polk State,
Lacey Osborne cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fifth with an RBI double that rolled to the center field fence, scoring
Kirsten Aldridge.
In the sixth, Polk State mounted a two-out rally to take the lead. With two outs and nobody on,
Marianna Salinas was hit by a pitch to put the tying run on.
Ciana Vargas followed with an infield single but the throw to first went into right field, allowing Salinas to score the tying run and Vargas to reach third.
Calonnie Holmes then legged out an infield single to score Vargas and put the Eagles ahead to stay.
After four innings from starting pitcher
Kaylyn Mitchum,
Jaelin Grant and
Grace Adamonis combined to keep the Bears scoreless over the final three innings. Adamonis induced a game-ending double play to pick up her first Polk State win.
Osborne and Foster each finished with two of the nine hits for Polk State. Aldridge and Shyla de Latour each reached base safely twice in the win.
Brianna Heroux homered to get the scoring started for Mott Community. Josie Spencer had two hits for the Bears in the loss.
Batting as the visiting team on its home field, Polk State dropped the second game of the day to Iowa Lakes Community College, 4-1.
Korilynn Charistians got the scoring started for Iowa Lakes with a two-run home run in the first. The first five Lakers reached base to start the day, but Polk State starting pitcher
Layla Hinojosa was able to settle in. Despite having two runners in scoring position and no one out, the freshman was able to get out of the first without further damage.
Charistians added a sacrifice fly in the second before Polk State (7-13) finally got on the board in the fourth.
Leia Hurst broke up the shutout with a two-out RBI single, scoring Aldridge to cut the deficit to 3-1. Addison Wheeler doubled home the game's final run for Iowa Lakes in the sixth.
Holmes had three of the seven hits for Polk State in the defeat. Hurst and Osborne each added two. After picking up the win in the first game, Adamonis gave the Eagles another solid effort in the circle, allowing just a run on four hits with two strikeouts in three innings of relief.
Iowa Lakes also finished with seven hits. Charistians and Wheeler each had two. Pitcher Katie Kvigne went the distance and allowed just an unearned run to earn the win for the Lakers.
Following Friday's split, Polk State is now 15-6 against out-of-state competition under Head Coach Kevin Lewis. The Eagles will resume Citrus Conference action on Tuesday when they travel to take on No. 6 Eastern Florida State College for a doubleheader.
