Box Score 1 WINTER HAVEN — In a pivotal Citrus Conference series on Friday, Polk State Softball was swept in its doubleheader with No. 16 Miami Dade College.
Polk State dropped a pitchers' duel in the first game, 3-1.
For four innings, Polk State's
Hayle Peterson and Miami Dade's Amanda Handa traded zeroes. The Sharks got all of their offense in the fifth with three runs. Leyani Viruet delivered the big blow with a two-run double.
The Eagles brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth with nobody out but couldn't plate a run. With Polk State down to its last out,
Calonnie Holmes broke up the shutout with a solo home run in the seventh.
Handa went the distance for the Sharks, allowing just the run on four hits and three walks while striking out 13. Holmes had two of the four Polk State hits.
Kirsten Aldridge and Shyla de Latour each had one.
Peterson allowed three runs on five hits and one walk in five innings for the Eagles.
Layla Hinojosa threw two scoreless innings to conclude the contest.
Nothing went right for Polk State in the second game. The Eagles (18-24, 10-16 Citrus Conference) were run ruled in five innings, 15-0.
After a scoreless first inning, Miami Dade scored five runs in the second inning, four in the third and six in the fifth. Caroline Mito and Makayla Deleon each went 3-for-4 for the Sharks. Mito scored three runs and drove in five more.
Holmes broke up the perfect game with a single to lead off the bottom of the fourth. That was Polk State's lone hit.
With the losses, Polk State falls five games back of Miami Dade for fifth in the conference. Polk State will remain home to host a doubleheader against Eastern Florida State College on Tuesday.
