WINTER HAVEN — Polk State Softball won't make the FCSAA Tournament this season but the Eagles continue to be giant slayers. Polk State picked up its fifth win of the year over a nationally ranked team with a 6-1 win over No. 10 Indian River State College in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
Polk State set the tone early with three runs in the first inning. Makenzie Foster drove in the first run by drawing a bases-loaded walk. After a Leia Hurst sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 2-0, Thea Williams came through with an RBI single.
The Pioneers had no answer for Polk State starting pitcher Hayle Peterson. Peterson scattered seven hits and took a shutout into the seventh inning when Indian River scored an unearned run.
Foster extended the lead to 4-0 with a solo home run to lead off the third inning. In the fourth, the Eagles added two more runs as Lacey Osborne followed a Kirsten Aldridge RBI double with a run-scoring single of her own.
At the top of the Polk State order, Calonnie Holmes shined, going 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Aldridge and Osborne each had two hits. Aldridge scored twice. Sophia Loreto had three of the seven hits for Indian River.
The second game didn't go as well as Polk State was run ruled in five innings, 8-0.
Hurst had the only two hits for the Eagles (21-31, 13-23 Citrus Conference). After the Pioneers scored twice in the first inning, Julianna Terito's two-run home run capped a six-run fourth for Indian River.
In addition to Terito, Jaci Alvey and McKenzie Gibson each had two RBIs for Indian River. In the circle, Emma Eekhoff struck out 11 batters in four shutout innings.
With the split, Polk State wraps up the month of April. They'll play their final home games of the season on Saturday with a doubleheader against No. 6 Santa Fe College.
