Box Score 1 HOBBS, N.M. – Polk State Volleyball was unable to pick up a win at the New Mexico JUCO Tournament, but the Eagles won't leave without taking a set. On the final day of the tournament on Saturday, Polk State gave No. 19 Dodge City Community College all it wanted.
After dropping the first set by a decisive 25-9 set, Polk State evened things up with a 25-23 win in the second set. The Eagles trailed 16-11 in the set before closing on a 14-7 run.
Dublin Fitzgerald's emphatic kill tied the set at 19. Polk State took its first lead of the set and went ahead for good on an
Ana Martinez ace. Fitzgerald and
Chillis Oke followed with a block at the net to extend the lead to 21-19.
Oke ultimately ended the set with a well-placed kill between players on the back line. The Conquistadors were able to take the final two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-20 for a 3-1 win.
Camila Freitag led the Eagles with 11 kills while Fitzgerald filled up the box score with eight kills and eight total blocks. Martinez added 14 digs.
Jasmine Mahoney led the way with 14 assists.
Polk State (0-11) wrapped up the trip with a 3-0 loss to North Central Texas College. Again, however, the Eagles were competitive. They lost by set scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-23.
Fitzgerald led the way with 10 kills and three total blocks.
Adriauna Combs and Oke added seven and six kills, respectively. Martinez set a season-high with 28 digs. Mahoney finished with 15 assists and nine digs in the loss.
With non-conference play now in the rear view, Polk State will hit the road to begin Citrus Conference action on Wednesday at Florida SouthWestern State College. The match is scheduled for 6 p.m.
