Box Score LEESBURG — Big innings and a stellar pitching performance were too much for Polk State Baseball to overcome as its winning streak ended at five with a 10-4 loss to Lake-Sumter State College on Saturday afternoon.
The Lakehawks seized control with 3-run third and fourth innings. While the offense was putting up crooked numbers, starting pitching Max Windham allowed just two runs on six hits while striking out 11 Eagles.
Nelson Taylor provided the early offense for Polk State (5-6). After drawing Polk State even at 1 apiece with a sacrifice fly in the third, Taylor blasted a solo home run — his first of the year — in the fifth.
Travis Stapleton and
Ray Mercer each had three hits. Mercer scored two of the four Polk runs while Stapleton added an RBI in the loss.
Ray Bermudez and
Damion Kenealy each finished with two hits for the Eagles.
A number of Lake-Sumter hitters had nice days as both teams finished with 11 hits. Lead-off man Nate Tinder finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Ryan Monaghan and Hunter Looper added two hits apiece and each drove in a run. Catcher Chris Palmi lifted a solo home run while driving in two and scoring twice.
Not much went right for Polk State on the mound, but
Trevor Caldwell was a bright spot. After tossing a gem in his last start, Caldwell worked around four walks to throw two scoreless innings of relief.
Dawson Turner allowed four runs, but struck out nine of the 10 batters he retired.
After a busy week, Polk State will have the next two days off. The Eagles return to action on Tuesday against Eastern Florida State College.
