Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Polk State Basketball concluded play on its home court with a highly competitive effort Saturday afternoon. The Eagles shot 70% from three-point range in the second half to top St. Petersburg College, 81-73.
The Eagles (11-17, 5-9 Central) shot 39.7% (25-for-63) from the field, including 43.5% (10-for-23) from behind the arc, while the Titans (6-24, 2-13 Central) finished 38.9% (28-for-72) from the floor and 40.9% (9-for-22) from downtown.
Polk was slow to gain its offensive rhythm in the first half, being held to 28.9% from the field and going 3-for-13 from three-point land throughout the first 20 minutes of action. The Eagles trailed the Titans 38-31 at halftime.
After trailing by 10 early in the second half, the Eagles retaliated with a flurry of prolific three-point shooting. Sophomore guard
George Pridgett sunk all three of his shots from the perimeter in the second half and scored 16 of his team-high 23 points during that stretch.Â
The Eagles put together a 15-4 run to take a 75-63 lead which proved too much for St. Petersburg to overcome.
"It was very important for this group to finish home play with a win," said Polk State Head Coach
Brandon Giles. "No matter what has happened this season, we have still have highly competitive and motivated young men on this squad and it was great to see them step up today."
Pridgett also dished out a team-best four assists for Polk. He was joined in double-digit scoring by freshman guard
Dominick Nelson, who scored 18 points and went 9-for-11 from the free throw line. Sophomore center
AJ Hamrick also shined, coming off the bench to score 15 points and haul in a team-best nine rebounds.
Polk will look to finish the regular season on a high note, as the Eagles travel to Gainesville on Tuesday for a rescheduled matchup with Santa Fe College. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
