Box Score 2 FORT MYERS — Polk State Volleyball won't pick up a win over a ranked team at the Adventures in Paradise Battle at the Beach Invitational but it will head home with a victory.
The Eagles (1-3) capped the two-day tournament with a 3-0 victory over Palm Beach State College on Saturday. Carolina Guerreiro finished with a season-low 14 kills but that still paced Polk State. She's led the Eagles in kills in each of their four matches this season.
Polk State felt the most resistance in the second set as it finished strong for a 25-23 victory. The Panthers didn't score more than 17 points in either of the other two sets.
Guerreiro added three service aces and six digs.
Carleiny Morillo led Polk State with 33 assists.
Irene Mostardini paced the Eagles with 16 digs.
The victory was the first for Polk State under Head Coach Dayanna Barbosa.
"lt feels pretty good to get my first win," Barbosa said. "We have a lot to work on but we are getting there. We will keep working hard to be competing for championships. Hopefully, we will have captain
Madi O'Sullivan back soon, so we can have better opportunities to do more with the team we have."
Polk State's trip started with three straight 3-1 losses to top-15 teams. Saturday started with a four-set loss to No. 9 Utah State University Eastern.
Neither team scored less than 20 points in any set. The Golden Eagles won the final two sets to take the match.
Guerreiro finished with 20 kills — her third straight match with at least 20 — while adding 10 digs and two service aces.
Keionna Mackey and
A'lanae Margaritha added 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
Emma Grant led Utah State Eastern with 16 kills. Mostardini led Polk State with 13 digs. Morillo finished with a match-high 43 assists.
Polk State will have a week off before its home opener on Saturday. The Eagles will open Suncoast Conference play when they host Daytona State College.
