Box Score WINTER HAVEN – Three unearned runs was the difference on Tuesday night as Polk State Baseball's rally fell short against Seminole State College of Florida, 3-2.
For six innings, the teams traded zeroes before an error by Polk State shortstop
Greg Pettay allowed the game's first run to score. The Eagles (8-7) nearly escaped with only one run allowed in the inning, but an RBI single from Seminole State's Jacob Green doubled the lead during what would be a three-run inning.
All five of the game's runs came in the seventh as Polk State was able to get two back in the bottom of the frame. With two outs,
Liam O'Neil's team-leading third home run of the year -- a two-run blast -- got the Eagles on the board and cut the deficit to one.
In the ninth, both teams put runners in scoring position, but neither could score. After
Pierce Glading worked around a two-out triple by Green in the top of the inning,
Damion Kenealy singled for Polk State to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Kenealy reached second on a wild pitch but
Aris Rivera and
Aaron Stelogeannis each struck out, ending the contest.
Despite the loss, Polk State pitching continued to shine.
Gavin Dicks, the starter, went four shutout innings, yielding just a hit and a walk while striking out five. Although he did not allow an earned run,
Wade Johnson took the loss, giving up three unearned on five hits while fanning four. Glading worked two scoreless for Polk State to end the night.
The loss for Polk State is just the third in the last 10 games. The Eagles will conclude a five-game homestand and open Citrus Conference play on Thursday against Santa Fe College. The first pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
