Box Score 2 GAINESVILLE – The bats never could get going for Polk State Baseball on Friday as the Eagles were swept in a doubleheader by Santa Fe College.
Â
In the first game, Polk State got another solid effort from its starting pitcher, but the offense just wasn't there as the Eagles dropped a seven-inning contest, 6-1.
Evan Koehler went five solid innings, allowing just two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four but took the loss.
Â
After three and a half scoreless innings, the Saints drew first blood with a run in the fourth, but the Eagles answered in the top of the fifth.
Kelsen Johnson drove in Polk State's lone run with a fielder's choice up the middle that scored
Aris Rivera.
Â
Santa Fe went ahead for good with a run in the fifth before creating some breathing room with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Landon Rogers' opposite-field blast to right field highlighted the inning for the Saints.
Â
Polk State finished with eight hits in the loss, but none went for extra bases.
Evan Wainman finished 2-for-3 at the dish.
Â
In the second game, it was more of the same as Polk State was downed, 7-1. Starter
Trevor Caldwell allowed just two runs in four innings but miscues in the fifth allowed Santa Fe to pad its lead.
Â
Santa Fe drew first blood in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run double by AJ Barrios. After
Wade Johnson's throwing error plated the third run for the Saints in the fifth inning, Barrios came through with an RBI single during a three-run frame to push the Santa Fe lead to 5-0.
Â
Polk State (9-9, 1-2 Citrus Conference) finally got on the board in the top of the sixth. For the second game in a row, Johnson plated the Eagles' only run – this time by drawing a bases-loaded walk to score
Liam O'Neil. Unfortunately for Polk State, it would leave the bags loaded.
Â
After the Saints minimized the damage from the Eagles, Santa Fe's Javier Soto did plenty of his own with a two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth. In the seventh, Polk State loaded the bases again with one out but could not capitalize.
Â
Polk State managed just three hits but drew 12 walks. Unfortunately for the Eagles, they were unable to get the runs home. Johnson and O'Neil each reached three times.
Â
Polk State will receive what may seem like an extended rest as it remains on the road to face Webber International University (B) on Tuesday night. The start time is slated for 6:30 p.m.
