Polk State Baseball can't overcome errors and big innings as Indian River sweeps doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT PIERCE — Red-hot Polk State Baseball finally came back to earth on Saturday. The Eagles managed just four total runs as they were swept by Indian River State College in a Citrus Conference doubleheader.

Entering Saturday, Polk State (24-17, 12-9 Citrus Conference) had won 12 of 13 games, including a 5-1 victory over Indian River State to open the three-game set on Thursday. The Pioneers rolled in the first game 8-2 before taking the finale, 5-2.

Indian River seized control of the first game — a seven-inning contest — with six runs in the third. That would cap the scoring for the game.

For Polk State, all the offense came early. Damion Kenealy singled home Roberto Odor in the first to get the scoring started. After the Pioneers went ahead with two runs in the bottom of the first, Kelsen Johnson's solo home run in the top of the second evened the score at two.

Unfortunately for Polk State, it was held to no runs and one hit over the final five innings. Odor had two of the four hits for the Eagles.

Evan Koehler took the loss but none of the eight runs allowed were earned. Five Polk State errors led to eight unearned runs for the Pioneers.

In the second game, starting pitcher Trevor Caldwell took the loss but gave a quality start for Polk State. Caldwell allowed just two runs in six innings of work, allowing just six hits and two walks while striking out five.

Indian River broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the seventh. After pushing across the go-ahead run, the Pioneers were able to add three off closer JT Long -- two in the seventh and another in the eighth.

Polk State again scored first with a run in the third but that was short-lived. Indian River answered with a run in the bottom of the frame.

Kenealy and Liam O'Neil each drove in runs in the loss. Johnson finished 2-for-4 with a run scored at the plate.

Polk State will look to get back on track on Tuesday as it travels to take on the University of Tampa (B). Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
