Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN — Polk State Baseball capped its first Citrus Conference series with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday. The Eagles took both games from Eastern Florida State College to complete the three-game series sweep.
Â
Polk State scored four unanswered runs to take the first game, a seven-inning affair, 4-2.
Â
Eastern Florida State struck early with two runs in the first but Polk State starter
Ronald Causby settled in nicely. Those would be the only two runs that Causby would allow over six innings. The right-hander surrendered just three hits and three walks while striking out four.
Â
Jack Muller got the Eagles' offense jumpstarted with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second. Muller scored the tying run in the fourth on an RBI double from
Kenay Acevedo.
Â
Polk State went ahead for good an inning later on
Hayden Testerman's RBI triple. He scored the game's final run one batter later on
Kustarr Webb's sacrifice fly. Testerman and
Fabian Gavalo each had two of the eight Polk State hits.
Â
Following the quality start from Causby,
Hayden Porter picked up his team-leading third save and second in as many games. Porter worked a 1-2-3 seventh to seal the victory.
Â
In the second game, Polk State used a seven-run fourth inning to seize control. The Eagles rolled to a 9-3 victory.
With the score tied 1-1,
Leo Suarez drew a walk to open the bottom of the fourth inning. Polk State (11-4, 3-0 Citrus) followed with five straight singles.
Marvin Montenegro's RBI single put the Eagles ahead for good. After Testerman doubled that lead with an RBI single of his own, Webb plated two by going back up the middle. Suarez capped the scoring with a two-run single later in the frame.
That's all that starter
Roman Corinti would need. For the second straight start, the sophomore right-hander did not yield an earned run. In five innings, Corinti allowed an unearned run while fanning three and scattering six hits and two walks.
Following the big fourth for Polk State, neither team scored again until the eighth. The Eagles countered two runs from Eastern Florida with a run of their own on a fielder's choice off the bat of
Carter Finnell.
Testerman and Muller each had three of the 13 Polk State hits. Gavalo was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Suarez finished with three RBIs.
Brad Rhode followed Corinti's stellar start with two scoreless innings of relief.
Â
After three victories to start conference play, Polk State will remain home to for a non-conference matchup with South Florida State College on Tuesday. The Eagles beat South Florida State 5-4 in Auburndale for their first win back on Jan. 24.
