WINTER HAVEN — After four straight wins, Polk State Baseball hopes to have got all its bad out of the way on Tuesday. The Eagles were run ruled in seven innings against Lake-Sumter State College, 16-4.
The last bit of momentum for Polk State (16-12) seemed to come in the bottom of the fourth inning. Trailing 4-0, catcher
Leo Suarez got the Eagles right back into it with a three-run home run to left field — his third blast of the year.
Lake-Sumter State answered with 12 straight runs and scored in each of the final five innings. The Lakehawks had at least three runs in four of those innings.
Marvin Montenegro capped the scoring with an RBI single to score
Edrick Ayala in the seventh. Montenegro and
Bradyn Potter each had two of the six Polk State hits.
On the mound,
Jason Sawyer and
Vincent Antuna threw scoreless frames in the first and second innings, respectively. Lake-Sumter went ahead for good with four runs in the third.
Yelserth Ayala finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs for the Lakehawks. Noah Morales had four hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Lake-Sumter's Carlos Fuenmayor went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Polk State will look to get back on track and wrap up a four-game homestand with a win on Thursday when it hosts No. 22 State College of Florida. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
