WINTER HAVEN -- Polk State Baseball picked up a huge Citrus Conference series win last week by taking two of three from then No. 22 State College of Florida. The Eagles haven't played since Friday, but they weren't done winning for the week of March 9 just yet.
Freshman catcher
Marvin Montenegro has been named the FCSAA Player of the Week. In four games last week, Montenegro went 9-for-13 (.692) with two home runs, seven RBIs and six runs scored.Â
Headlining the big week for the Lakeland native was a
5-for-5 effort in Thursday's 18-10 win over SCF. Montenegro had three doubles, a home run, five RBIs and four runs scored in the win as he finished a triple shy of the cycle. Five of his nine hits last week went for extra bases.
For the season, Montenegro is hitting .366. Montenegro leads the team with two triples and 29 RBIs and is tied with
Kustarr Webb for the team lead with five home runs. He also leads the team with a .467 on-base percentage.Â
Montenegro becomes the first Polk State player to earn FCSAA Player of the Week recognition this season. Polk State currently sits at 18-13 for the year and 8-7 in Citrus play. He and the Eagles will begin the week at home on Tuesday against University of Tampa (B).Â
