CLEARWATER — After six straight Citrus Conference losses, Polk State Baseball got back on track on Thursday night. The Eagles held off St. Petersburg College for a big road win, 6-5.
Polk State (14-11, 4-6 Citrus) got a stellar start on the mound from
Carson Montsdeoca. In six innings, the sophomore allowed just an unearned run on four hits and two walks while fanning seven.
The Eagles led 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh but St. Petersburg came roaring back with four runs in the inning. Down 6-5, the Titans put the tying run in scoring position in each of the final two innings but
Dalton Tibbetts came up clutch to strand the runners.
Polk State drew first blood with two runs in the second.
Jack Muller plated a run with an RBI single before scoring on
Josh Cruz's triple.
Bradyn Potter's solo homer to lead off the third extended the lead to 3-0.
St. Petersburg got on the board with an unearned run in the fifth. The Eagles then pushed across three in the top of the sixth.
Kustarr Webb's RBI double extended the lead to 4-1. Muller followed with a two-run double to cap a three-RBI night.
Muller and
Kenay Acevedo each had two hits in the victory.
Zach Lester finished 3-for-5 with a run scored. Angel Pichardo drove in two runs for the Titans.
Polk State will try to take the series when the scene shifts to Winter Haven for a doubleheader on Saturday. Game times are set for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
