WINTER HAVEN — Through four Citrus Conference series, Polk State Baseball has been involved in four sweeps. The Eagles were on the right side of the most recent one, capping the series sweep of St. Petersburg College by taking both games of Saturday's twin bill.Â
Polk State's
Ronald Causby flirted with a no-hitter in the first game — a seven-inning contest. Causby took a no-hitter into the seventh in Polk State's 9-3 win.
St. Petersburg's Angel Pichardo broke up the no-no with a lead-off double. He would later score to break up the shutout. The Titans had four hits in the final inning, including a two-run single from former Polk State outfielder Nick Upperman.
The Eagles wasted no time seizing control. Polk State batted around during a seven-run first inning.Â
A two-run double by
Kustarr Webb got the scoring started. After a
Kevin Brunet sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 3-0,
Kenay Acevedo and
Josh Cruz followed with RBI singles of their own.
Bradyn Potter capped the big inning with a two-run single — his second hit of the frame.
Hayden Testerman and
Zach Lester came through with consecutive RBI singles in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 9-0. The Eagles finished with 11 hits, including 10 singles. Potter finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Cruz added two hits to go with a run scored and an RBI.
As for Causby, he went the full seven innings to pick up the win and preserve the bullpen for the second game. Causby scattered five walks and struck out six.
In the second, Polk State again used an early monster inning to seize control. An eight-run second inning set the tone as the Eagles rolled to a 10-6 win.
Lester got the scoring started with an RBI single in the first to score Potter. After having just one extra-base hit in the first game, Polk State was a double shy of a collective cycle in the second inning of game two.
Marvin Montenegro and
Jack Muller had the big hits in the inning. Montenegro had a two-run triple before Muller belted a two-run home run. Lester and Webb each added RBIs in the inning.
On the mound, Polk State (16-11, 6-6 Citrus) starter
Roman Corinti took a shutout into the sixth inning. Corinti earned the win after allowing just two runs in the sixth — his final inning of the day. He yielded just four hits and one walk while striking out seven.Â
The Titans were able to push across three unearned runs in the seventh. Lenin Nunez had a two-run single for St. Petersburg in the inning and finished with three RBIs in the game.Â
Leo Suarez capped the scoring for Polk State with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh. St. Petersburg added a run in the ninth.
Montenegro, Lester and Muller each finished with two hits and two RBIs in the win. Muller scored three runs. Brunet went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Nunez and Upperman each had three hits for the Titans in the loss.
After a stretch in which it lost seven out of eight games, Polk State has now won four straight. The Eagles will remain home to take on Lake-Sumter State College on Tuesday.
