Baseball bested by Bobcats on the road

Box Score NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Polk State Baseball will continue the search for its first win of the 2023 campaign, after the Eagles fell on the road Monday evening to Pasco-Hernando State College, 6-1.

The Eagles (0-4) scored their lone run on seven hits and had five left on base. The Bobcats (2-2) crossed six on 13 hits and left nine baserunners stranded.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Evan Koehler gave the Eagles a chance on the mound, tossing five shutout innings with one walk and nine strikeouts. Koehler pounded the zone, tossing 51 of his 68 pitches for strikes. 

The Polk bats earned their only run on the night via a wild pitch that scored sophomore catcher Travis Stapleton in the top of the fifth and gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Stapleton finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate.

The Bobcats retaliated with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and four in the bottom of the seventh to surge to victory. Five different individuals drove in a run for Pasco-Hernando, including shortstop Clay Badylak, who went 2-for-5 with a triple, a home run, and two runs batted in.

Logan Jones got the winning decision for the Bobcats, pitching 3.1 scoreless frames of relief, where he fanned four batters. Polk freshman righty Aiden Butler took the loss on the mound after conceding two earned runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Polk looks to get in the win column on Wednesday afternoon, as the Eagles host Santa Fe College in their 2023 home opener. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
