Box Score LEESBURG – In its first true road test of the year, Polk State Baseball's pitching staff passed with flying colors on Wednesday afternoon in a 2-0 victory over Lake-Sumter State College.
Four different Polk State hurlers combined to toss a three-hit shutout. The Eagles didn't issue a single walk. Just two Lake-Sumter runners reached scoring position.
Wade Johnson,
Aiden Alvarez,
Jackson Graden, and
JT Long dominated from the mound for the Eagles. Johnson, the starter, went the first four innings, yielding just two hits while striking out four. Polk State (2-4) was aided by two double plays in the field.
Alvarez, in his second career appearance, struck out four in two innings of work to pick up the win. After Graden worked a 1-2-3 10-pitch inning in the seventh,
JT Long retired all six batters he faced, including four strikeouts to pick up his second save of the year.
Although Polk State was a little better, it was a nice day on the mound for the Lakehawks' staff. The Eagles managed just six hits but battled at the plate to draw eight walks.
The Eagles were finally able to break through with a two-out rally in the fourth inning.
Aaron Stelogeannis jumpstarted the offense with a double. After
Liam O'Neil and
Roberto Odor worked walks, Stelogeannis scored the game's first run on a wild pitch.
One day after leaving 14 on base, Polk State stranded 10 on Wednesday. The Eagles, however, were able to get an insurance run in the ninth when
Damion Kenealy grounded into a fielder's choice to score
Greg Pettay.
Stelogeannis reached safely three times for Polk State, finishing 2-for-3 with the lone extra base hit of the game for the Eagles. O'Neil reached base in each of his three plate appearances. Lead-off man Luke Bentley had two of the three hits for Lake-Sumter State.
Following the win to snap a three-game skid, Polk State will have Thursday off before preparing for another busy weekend with three games against Pasco-Hernando State College in two days. The Eagles will host the Bobcats for a single contest on Friday at 3 p.m.
