Box Score 2 TAMPA — Polk State Baseball got back over .500 and evened its Citrus Conference record on Saturday. The Eagles accomplished the feat with a doubleheader sweep of Hillsborough Community College by scores of 6-3 and 8-2.
The wins completed the three-game sweep of the Hawks. Polk State (16-14, 6-6 Citrus Conference) dominated on the mound and at the plate. The Eagles didn't trail once on Saturday.
Polk State seized control early in the first game with three runs in the third and fourth innings.
Greg Pettay's three-run home run in the third highlighted the offensive barrage in the middle innings of the seven-inning contest.
Evan Wainman added a two-run blast in the fourth.
Evan Koehler shined on the mound, yielding just two runs in five innings. Koehler struck out six to work around seven hits and three walks. Both of Hillsborough's runs off the right-hander came in the third.
JT Long worked the final two innings.
The story in the second game was Polk State starting pitcher
Trevor Caldwell. Caldwell threw the first complete game of the year for the Eagles, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out nine.
Scoreless through four, Polk State struck first with two runs in the fifth. The Eagles added a run in the sixth, three in the seventh, and two in the ninth. The Hawks broke up the shutout with two runs of their own in the ninth.
Aris Rivera went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Wainman and
Aaron Stelogeannis each went 3-for-5. Stelogeannis added a run and an RBI.
Roberto Odor recorded a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Despite going without a hit,
Liam O'Neil drove in a pair of runs. The Eagles finished with 15 hits.
Now winners of four straight games, Polk State will return home to take on Westchester Community College on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
