Box Score FORT MYERS – For Polk State Baseball, the fours were wild on Thursday. The Eagles used a four-run sixth inning to clinch a fourth straight appearance in the FCSAA Tournament with an 8-4 win over Florida SouthWestern State College.
The Eagles (33-21, 18-13 Citrus Conference) trailed 4-2 heading to the sixth inning before
Kelsen Johnson came up with the biggest hit of the game. Following a sacrifice fly from
Jordan Thomas that cut the deficit to one, Johnson belted a three-run blast to dead centerfield to put Polk State ahead for good.
Polk State was able to add to its lead with a pair of insurance runs in the ninth. Back-to-back RBI singles from
Pierce Glading and
Aris Rivera doubled the Polk State advantage.
JT Long worked two scoreless innings of relief to pick up his FCSAA-leading 10th save of the year.
The Eagles drew first blood in Thursday's contest with a solo home run from
Damion Kenealy in the top of the first, but the Buccaneers answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double from Luca Danos. They took the lead an inning later on a solo home run by Jared Davis.
After
Aaron Stelogeannis' RBI groundout tied it in the third, the Eagles looked to have taken the lead in the fifth when Kenealy appeared to ground into an RBI fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Interference, however, was called on the slide by
Roberto Odor at second base -- to the dismay of Polk State Head Coach Al Corbeil. Following a discussion by the umpiring crew, the call on the field stood.
FSW went back in front in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run by Victor Figueroa. From there,
Evan Koehler,
Ryan Combs, and Long held the Buccaneers to just one hit the rest of the way.
Koehler earned the win, allowing four runs on nine hits and one walk in a gritty six innings. Johnson and Rivera each finished with three of Polk State's 13 hits. Johnson scored three times in the victory.
Kenealy and Glading each had two-hit days while combining for three runs scored. Danos and Justin Thomas each had three of the nine hits for the Buccaneers in the loss. Three FSW errors led to five unearned runs for the Eagles.
With the win, Polk State guarantees itself at least a spot in the FCSAA Tournament play-in. The Eagles can punch their ticket to the quarterfinals with one win in its home doubleheader against FSW or one loss by College of Central Florida to Citrus Conference-leading Indian River State College among other scenarios. Game times at Bing Tyus Yard are set for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
