Box Score 2 MELBOURNE, Fla. - Polk State Baseball found itself on the wrong side of a no-hitter but the right side of the win column on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles topped Eastern Florida State College 2-1 in game one, despite failing to register a hit, before dropping the series finale 5-2.
With the win in game one of the doubleheader, Polk State (27-18, 14-10 Citrus) clinched the series over Eastern Florida and currently sits at fourth in the Citrus Conference standings.
GAME ONE: Polk State 2, Eastern Florida 1 (7 Innings - Scheduled)
The Eagles got on the board in the top of the first.
Roberto Odor drew a lead-off walk to start the inning and
Kelsen Johnson followed by reaching first and advancing into scoring position with Odor via an error by the EFSC third baseman.
In the next at-bat,
Damion Kenealy lifted a high fly ball to right field which was deep enough to score Odor and make it 1-0 Polk.
The Titans evened things up 1-1 in the bottom of the second, where things remained for the majority of the contest.
Starting pitcher
Evan Koehler tossed an excellent game on the mound for the Eagles. Koehler allowed his one earned run on just four hits while striking out five, improving to 5-4 on the season with the victory.
After
Liam O'Neil reached on an error to commence the seventh inning,
Nicholas Upperman was called upon to pinch run for O'Neil. After working his way to third, an
Aaron Stelogeannis groundout brought Upperman home for the go-ahead run.
JT Long earned his ninth save of the season, sitting the Titans down in order in the bottom of the seventh.
GAME TWO: Eastern Florida 5, Polk State 2
The Eagles got on the board first once again, plating two runs in the second via an RBI single from
Pierce Glading and an RBI sac bunt by
Roberto Odor.
However, the Titans found the big inning in the bottom of the third, plating four runs to take a 4-2 lead. Eastern Florida scratched across an insurance run in the top of the sixth, as the Eagles went scoreless over the final seven frames.Â
Trevor Caldwell took the loss in game two, conceding four earned, walking three, and striking out four over 5.2 innings pitched.
Wade Johnson,
Aiden Alvarez, and
Ryan Combs combined to close out the game with 3.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The Eagles take a brief reprieve from conference play this Tuesday, as they travel to Palatka to face St. John's River State College. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
