Box Score 2 AUBURNDALE — For the second day in a row, Polk State Baseball pulled out a one-run win before losing in a hard-fought contest against a nationally ranked team on Saturday. The Eagles went 2-2 over the two-day Florida JUCO Early Bird Kickoff.
The Eagles' most dramatic win of the young season came in the first game on Saturday.
Derek Fermaint's walk-off double capped the comeback as Polk State (2-2) rallied past Palm Beach State College in a seven-inning game, 8-7.
Polk State trailed 4-0 early before scoring five straight runs over the third and fourth innings. The Panthers regained the lead with three runs in the sixth, but the Eagles drew even with two in the bottom of the inning on an RBI triple from
Hayden Testerman and a sacrifice fly from
Jordan Thomas.Â
After
Zane Wright worked a scoreless seventh, Fermaint capped the victory. Fermaint and
Andre Mason each finished with two hits. Thomas scored twice and drove in three runs.
A three-run third inning for No. 22 Indian River State College was the difference as Polk State dropped the finale, 4-2.
Kenay Acevedo finished the day with three hits and an RBI double that gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the first. The Pioneers tied things in the bottom of the inning before Maikol Lucena's two-run single highlighted the third.
Mason also finished with two hits and an RBI in the top the seventh in the seven-inning affair. The Eagles outhit the Pioneers 8-7.
Vincent Antuna and
Jackson Graden combined to throw 3.1 scoreless innings.
Kelyn Dallio took the loss in his Polk State debut.
The Eagles will try to get back over .500 on Tuesday when they travel to Tampa to face Hillsborough Community College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
