Box Score WINTER HAVEN — Freshman outfielder
Derek Fermaint has been a member of the Polk State Baseball team for just six games. He already has two walk-off RBIs.
On Wednesday night, Fermaint plated the winning run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Hayden Testerman scored the winning run as Polk State beat Lake-Sumter State College in its home opener, 9-8.
After the Lakehawks scored the tying run in the top of the ninth,
Roman Corinti was able to minimize the damage and leave the bases loaded. Corinti went on to earn the win.
Testerman and
Andy Schroeder started the ninth-inning rally with back-to-back walks. After
Kustarr Webb successfully moved both runners into scoring position,
Simon Scharff struck out swinging. A walk to
Kenay Acevedo loaded the bases and set the stage for Fermaint to give the Eagles (3-3) another walk-off win.
Lake-Sumter jumped to an early 2-0 before Schroeder's two-run home highlighted a six-run  second inning. The Lakehawks cut the lead to one with three runs in the third before taking a 7-6 lead with two runs in the seventh.
Polk State regained the lead in the bottom of the frame with two runs of their own. Schroeder and Testerman each finished with two hits and two RBIs. Fermaint added two RBIs. The Eagles won despite three errors in the field, which led to three unearned runs for the Lakehawks.
After a day off, Polk State will hit the road on Friday to take on Pasco-Hernando State College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
