Box Score WINTER HAVEN — Polk State Baseball will enter Citrus Conference play on a four-game winning streak and with a .500 record. The Eagles held off St. Johns River State College on Tuesday night to even their record, 12-10.
A five-run third inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from
Mason Mojica, broke a 1-1 tie and put Polk State (7-7) ahead for good. The Eagles added three runs in the fourth with two coming on a single from
Kustarr Webb to take a commanding 9-1 lead.
St. Johns River refused to go quietly. The Vikings clawed to within one at 11-10 after pushing across five runs in the fifth and four in the seventh. Brody Dalton and Thomas Bly, who combined for three home runs in last week's game in Palatka, hit back-to-back jacks in the seventh.
Andy Schroeder answered with a solo blast for Polk in the bottom of the inning.
After Roman Cortini struck out the side for Polk State in the eighth,
Wade Johnson stranded a runner in the ninth to earn the save.
Aiden Alvarez picked up his second win of the season.
The teams combined for 23 hits with Polk State recording 12. Webb, Schroeder,
Andre Mason, and
Derek Fermaint each had two hits. Webb finished with four RBIs. Seven of the 12 Polk State runs were unearned.
Polk State will try to keep the momentum going into Thursday as it visits Santa Fe College to kick off Citrus Conference play. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
