Box Score MELBOURNE — Two days after losing on a walk-off home run, Polk State Baseball used a game-winning grand slam that didn't leave the yard in Wednesday's 10-6 win over Eastern Florida State College.
Andy Schroeder delivered the Eagles with an inside-the-park grand slam in the top of the 10th to break a 6-6 tie.
Kustarr Webb and
Hayden Testerman were each by pitches to start the rally.
Kenay Acevedo singled to load the bases before Schroeder's heroics came three pitches later.
Polk State (4-7) had let a 6-2 lead slip away before the four-run 10th.
Wade Johnson allowed just a walk in two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.
After the teams traded two-spots in the first inning, Polk State starting pitcher
JT Long settled in nicely. Long bounced back to allow just two hits and no runs over the next four innings. Long allowed two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out 11 in five innings of work.
After an ugly first inning for both teams, the Eagles went ahead with two runs and some good situational hitting in the second. A sacrifice fly by Testerman in the fourth and an RBI single from
Liam O'Neil in the fifth extended the Polk State advantage to 6-2. The Titans, however, were able to get to the Polk State bullpen.
Eastern Florida State scored three runs in the seventh, highlighted by Kevin Smith's two-run homer. The Titans tied the game 6-6 in the eighth on Richard Collazo's RBI double.
Acevedo finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Webb and
Josh Cruz each added two hits. Webb scored three runs in the win.
With its first road win under its belt, Polk State will return home to take on Ranger College for a doubleheader. The first game starts at 12 p.m.
