Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN — Polk State Baseball returned home on Saturday and completed the doubleheader sweep of Ranger College with a pair of one-run wins.
Polk State rallied to win the first game on
Derek Fermaint's third walk-off RBI on the season. His bases-loaded single gave the Eagles a 6-5 victory.
Ranger scored two runs in the second and two more in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. The Eagles were finally able to get the bats going in the bottom of the fifth when they pushed across five runs.
After an RBI single from
Hayden Testerman got Polk State on the board, a hit by pitch and a fielder's choice cut the lead to 4-3.
Zach Lester followed with a two-run double to give the Eagles their first lead, 5-4.
In a contest originally scheduled for seven innings, the Rangers drew even in the seventh on Larry Drake's RBI single. In the ninth, Polk State loaded the bases with nobody out, but Ranger was able to prolong the contest with a line out and a short flyout before Fermaint singled in the winner on the first pitch.
Jake Echols allowed just an unearned run on three hits in four innings of relief to pick up the win. He struck out five. At the plate, Testerman was 3-for-4.
Kustarr Webb added two hits and a run scored.
In the second game, Polk State (6-7) withstood a couple of rallies to win, 7-6.
In the nightcap, the roles were reversed as the Eagles raced to a 4-0 lead.
Liam O'Neil and Lester each had RBI hits during a three-run first. The Eagles tacked on with a run in the second.
Catcher Carlos Beltran drew the Rangers even with a fourth-inning grand slam. The Eagles answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.Â
After Testerman's RBI single put Polk State ahead for good, Webb drew a bases-loaded walk. Webb capped the scoring for Polk State with an RBI single in the sixth.
In the seven-inning contest, the Rangers were able to score twice in the seventh and put the tying run on base.
Wade Johnson struck out Michael Lozano to end the game.
Aiden Alvarez struck out three in 1.1 innings of relief to earn the win. Testerman had a second straight three-hit game. Webb finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs.
Now winners of three straight, Polk State will return home on Tuesday to host St. Johns River State College. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
