ST. PETERSBURG — In a contest between the last two teams without a Citrus Conference win, Polk State Basketball left the Gibbs Campus Gymnasium still in search of its first conference victory. St. Petersburg College held off the Eagles on Wednesday night, 76-71.
Baskets by
Ethan Simon and
Harold Lee gave Polk State (4-14, 0-5 Citrus) an early 6-4 lead. The Titans responded with a 14-0 run and never looked back.
A fast-break dunk by
Eric Dailey finally ended the run, but Polk State could get nothing going offensively in the first half. The Eagles trailed 33-20 at the break — their lowest first-half total of the season.
The Titans opened the second half on a 14-3 run to build the lead to 24. The Eagles got as close as 13 multiple times, including on a three-point play by
Isaiah McCray midway through the second half, but never could cut it to single digits until the final two minutes.
The loss for Polk State is its 11th straight and the first of six straight road games. The Eagles will visit Miami Dade College on Saturday.
